• A various types of love from Japan

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam shares the delight of hosting a Japanese Film Festival 2011 – LOVE – in Hanoi and Danang in October and November 2011.

The selected films this year are all related to “Love.”

Love is one of the important themes in our life, but the way of expressing it and for which we feel love vary in cultures and individuals.

The latest film Paradise Kiss (2011), for instance, depicts a gradual development of love between a handsome fashion designer-to-be student and a high school girl, while the action movie Kamui (2009) focuses on love for freedom. Both films star the most in-demand talents, Osamu Mukai & Keiko Kitagawa, Kenichi Matsuyama (Norwegian Wood by Tran Anh Hung) & Koyuki (The Last Samurai), respectively, but the loves described in each film are totally different.

Even pure loves go to various directions. In the film The Milkwoman (2004), an unmarried 50 year old woman keeps her first love from high school over decades and the film quietly follows the unexpected turns after her encounter with her first love, a married middle-aged civil servant. The time spiral story in the film A Stranger of Mine (2004), on the other hand, comically depicts the sequences of pure love of a businessman who fell in love with an almost stranger.

The almost all selected films hold several awards not only from Japan but also from the world and all films are highly acclaimed by critics. 8 films in total will be screened with English and Vietnamese subtitles.

We do hope you will enjoy the diversity of the Japanese films through which we can also witness the variety of love.
